To sound like a cliche' interview tell us about yourself, where your from and what got you into tattooing? I read somewhere that tattooing is similar to playing guitar, everyone has a certain style, a certain take on it perhaps influenced by another artist. Whats your STYLE considered and do you have a person that influenced you?
BR: I have a pretty wide range of things I enjoy doing, from color realism to black and gray portraits. I read an article in a magazine early in my career by Cory Kruger and he said that he would not be known for having one style, but to be proficient at all styles. That made a lot of sense to me, and I've tried to be the same way. As far as influences, I think I could be here all day on that one. Anyone who has ever tattooed me, that I have watched tattoo, or talked to has influenced me in some way, but most of all the guys I work with. I'm lucky to have them.
For people only familiar with the industry through shows like L.A. Ink and whatever that other show is called, how different is the typical day at the shop for you as opposed to the drama filled, most likely scripted life in the shop of the artists on these shows? BR: If they were to make a REAL show in our shop, nobody would watch it! We're not as cool as you may think we are!
To your best ability, explain the roles of each person that works in the shop. BR: Myself, Chad Schloss and Tyler Pritchett tattoo, and Austin Moore holds down the piercings. We all pitch in together to make things work.
How do you all determine who will work on a customer that comes in? Is it given the car salesman treatment where you pounce on whomever is flipping through your photographs of tats or is it a more laid back approach? BR: We take turns, we have enough work to spread it around.
If Darth Vader and Darth Maul were UFC Fighters who would most likely come out ahead? BR: Not fair Sharky, how about Vader vs. Spock, or Captain Kirk......yeah, that would be better.
Whats the typical questions you get asked while working on someone? if I asked it I will edit it out of our interview so i can look cool and in the know. BR: People ask if I've ever messed one up. My typical response is: Just now. That gets some faces!
Most rediculous request, if any.
Is there anything that you WON'T tattoo on someone? BR: I won't do anything I feel is offensive to any religion, race, or is gang related. (no swasticas for you Sharky)
Do you ever imagine giving a tattoo to Mayor Bill Paxton? BR: Probably not.
If he wanted a tattoo what do you think it would be? BR: Perhaps a Stalin quote, maybe an inflatable quilting tent, or a portrait of B. Arther.
David Lee Roth was asked this about being a singer, but I will ask you as an Artist, What would you be doing if you weren't in the Tattoo Industry and why? BR: Back to airbrushing cars and bikes, that's all I know.
Back to David Lee Roth, do you think Van Halen will ever get back together? the original lineup that is. BR: Well, one can only hope. If they did, Busch Light would definitly see a rise in sales.
In closing, of course, I'd like to thank you for your time and being the subject of our first ever Paducah Promotions interview. BR:Thanks for having me. I feel honored!
