![]() Introduce yourself to those who dont know who you are and what you do....
What got you into the "BBQ Sauce" game if you will?
The bbq sauce part came about more or less on a dare. I just decided I could do it better than what we were buying and threw down the gauntlet and started experimenting with different flavors and out of nowhere man it just all came together. I realized I had something Finally I had a sauce that was authentic but familiar, complex but not complicated or muddy, refined but not pretentious. I knew I had something that would get my grandfather's seal of approval.
Please tell us the latest milestones that Draper BBQ has acheived? We’ve competed in several local competitions and even competed at Memphis in May, which is the world’s largest pork cooking competition. Our sauce finished with the 8th highest score there out of 230+ teams. No, we didn’t win, but for us it was like going to the World Series and actually beating out some amazing teams along the way.
We’ve been invited back to Memphis in May again this year to compete again. Our Smokin’ Sauce was release to market in October. Our A.P. Rub will be officially available this month. We are currently working on a cookbook. I hope to have it published in the last half of this year. But beyond any of that, we’ve made a ton of friends and believers in the Draper’s BBQ way of doing things. Our fans, in my opinion, are the single greatest achievement so far. Our fans are diehards and insane…and we LOVE it lol. What other services does the small business of Drapers BBQ offer? Right now we offer our Smokin’ Sauce and A.P. Rub. We have a honey bbq sauce and a rib rub on their way to market very soon. As well as other merchandise like tshirts and hats. I’m a huge music fan, play guitar and always wanted to have my own band tshirt lol….so I figure might as well have some fun with this.
How do we order the sauce? Local folks are welcome to email me direct at

. I will get you a bottle of sauce. We sell it direct to folks for $5 a bottle. This saves you a little bit of money on the price we have to charge online and of course shipping. You can always hit our online store @ www.drapersbbq.com/store to order but it is $6 a bottle there. Option 3 is to visit www.drapersbbq.com/buy.html and check out the local stores we are in. There are several in the Paducah area. We are always looking for more mom and pop places to carry our sauce, so if you don’t see your favorite place on the list email me and I will make some phone calls and see what we can do!
Do you think that Threes Company was a good sitcom? Man that’s a tough one. I mean who doesn’t like good old Jack Tripper lol, but I wasn’t a fan of Suzanne Summers or Joyce DeWitt at all. Now cousin Cindy…yeah she was better. Of course you gotta love Richard Kline’s character and of course Don Knotts was great. It just wasn’t really my show though overall. I was much more of a Airwolf and Dukes of Hazzard sort of kid lol.
Have you ever been involved in "BBQ On The River" ? Yes. I have judged and helped out a few teams. I think it’s a good event overall from a charity aspect but I have to say just from a bbq competition view point it’s a nightmare. It’s more about who has the most bbq pits, most people who can help, who can churn out the most grub and is just a marathon. I think it’s an interesting event and does a lot of good for charity, but just isn’t the purest of competitions.
What would you think if a rap group such as Produkt Plasemint did a jingle for you? We’d love it! I don’t think my grandmother would like the language but that’s ok haha. Little known fact about Shane Draper…I am one of the biggest Ice Cube fan’s out there. Always loved his stuff and old school rap in general. The new stuff doesn’t do anything for me, but back in the day I listened to way more rap than I did metal and grunge. Now I lean a bit more the grunge / metal side of the house, but that is mainly because I don’t get to listen to “my” music without little ears around to hear what’s being said haha. It’s only funny when your 3yr threatens to bust a cap in the dog for gangin’ his Fruit Loops once…then mom gets involved and it just gets ugly... And what was the website again?
It is ALWAYS under revision. I change it often so don’t be surprise if it looks totally different from one day to the next. It is www.drapersbbq.com
Where do you see Draper BBQ in 10 years? Still doing what we do man. This game is about making people smile and earning respect of your customers one rib, one sandwich, one bite at a time. Does that mean we will be rolling in the money in 10yrs, I don’t know. We don’t do it just for money, that’s just not us. I will say we have made HUGE strides in the last 2yrs and if we maintain anywhere close to that level of momentum…well Pinky we will take over the world lol.
Let me say from a personal experience that you hands down make the best ribs I have ever had in my life. Any plans on taking your talents to the Restaraunt biz? Well first off I am always humbled and all I can say is thanks, we appreciate the feedback. That is why we do what we do and refuse to cut corners.
And aaaah yes the restaurant question. We have been begged to start one. We have been offered the money to do so from an angel investor. All I can say is that….until I know I can turn out the same level of quality day in and day out in a restaurant I just cant do it. I would love to. I have 100 recipes that would be great for it. I am a great cook and could most definitely run a line. All the reason’s I would want to do it though are self centered. At the end of the day I have a young family that consists of my wife, an 8yr old son and a 4month old son. I got out of the military to always be around for them and if I ran a restaurant I doubt I would get to see them very much. Shane, thank you so much for your time anything you would like to add? You mean aside from….BUY SOME BBQ SAUCE!!!! Lol I just want to thank anyone and everyone who has ever said the words Draper’s BBQ and helped spread the word about us in any way. We wouldn’t exist with you. Thank you for taking the time to support us! |
